"As I see it, the best things schools can do for kids is to help them learn how to distinguish useful talk from bullshit..."
"Such moral and ethical questions are truly meaningful to young people who are learning to balance their natural idealism with a deeper understanding of social and institutional power as well as the complexities of human nature."
"Unless we are vigilant, we tend to detach information content from its source, forgetting where it came from."

Your presentation was one of my favorites the music was dramatic and it was right on target with your Note card that said " I teach students to balance their natural idealism". Nice style.
ReplyDeleteThere is so much information being taught to students today, We are still using the traditional methods while trying to network the use of Digital and Social media.
I enjoyed your softer techno-ish music. I also found it fun that we chose one of the same quotes! I also focused on students learning to balance their idealism and understanding the complexities of human nature. These are great points of discussion and bring up a lot of relevant discussion topics that make this confessional a very useful learning tool in the classroom. Well done!
ReplyDeleteYou are also the first one to pick your cards up as you present them. The others, like mine put down the cards as we reveal them for the most part. I videoed mine outside, so I picked up mine individually as I was afraid they would fall or blow away, tehehe! Nice job though and look forward to watching your digital story!
Marlisa,
ReplyDeleteI like how you reversed the normal pattern of scrolling to the next card by adding a card. This struck me as the power of adding content and understanding as you learn more about anything and everything. That is a powerful statement beyond just the reading content.
Your choice of quotes from the reading provide good insight into the idea of educating the "whole" student, well done!
Great point when you mentioned, its our responsibility is to distinguish useful talk from bullshit. I agree, because so much crap is in the media now which makes some teens start to believe everything that they see or hear.
ReplyDeleteGood video! I liked your paraphrasing! I agree that we need to create bull-shit detectors early on!
ReplyDeleteI like the last card, where you say you teach students to be vigilant. That is a powerful statement! It seems like every media message is loaded, and young people are major targets for these messages. We empower our students to think for themselves when we teach them to see media for what it truly is. I also think the next sentence, about teaching students to separate media messages from their source, is also important.
ReplyDeleteI love your first quote and last card the most. Teaching students to want to learn for themselves is a huge task that must happen!
ReplyDeleteYour music sets an interesting mood in your video. Perhaps more serious? I'm struggling to label it.
ReplyDeleteI think your quotes set a theme. We must maintain a firm grasp on analyzing the information around us, as the information we share can either take away from the bullshit, or simply add to the pile. Well done!
